Han-ba Museum collects and exhibits materials for a creature called Han-ba that is a mythical creature I imagined. It is said that Han-ba is in horse shape but has only two legs, inhabits in Japan since ancient times. Although there are a few cases of eyewitness accounts such as “Big foot” or “Nessie”, its existence is biologically close to unclassified one. In the Museum, biological or historical data for Han-ba are put on display. There are wide varieties of exhibits such as an ancient epistle, a mummy, a clay doll, a folk tale, and recorded nicker by coincidence etc. A caption and comment are attached to all the exhibits. Comment explains characteristics of these exhibits and when and by whom it was first discovered. Although there are a variety of exhibits, breathing Han-ba itself does not exist as an exhibited object. That’s why beholders have no choice but imagine or suppose the existence of Han-ba from exhibited materials. In that process, beholders are going to trace past human’s behavior or the history of society from documents attached to exhibits. I mean this work has the structure as follows: the more you try to know about Han-ba, the better culture will come in sight. And the work has also a critical aspect of museums.

『半馬博物館』

半馬博物館とは半馬という生物に関する資料を蒐集、展示している博物館である。半馬とは私が想像した架空の生物である。半馬は足が2本しか無い馬のような姿をしていて古来より日本に生息しているとされている。その存在はビックフットやネッシー、のような目撃例こそあるものの生物学的には未分類なものに近い。博物館内には生物学的または歴史的な半馬に関する資料が展示される。それらは半馬が出てくる古代の書簡や、半馬のミイラ、半馬の土偶、半馬が出てくる昔話、偶然録音された鳴き声など多岐に及ぶ。全ての展示物にはキャプションと解説文がついている。解説文には展示物の特徴と、いつ誰に発見されたかが記されている。 展示物は様々なものがあるが、生きている半馬そのものは展示物として存在しない。そのため鑑賞者は展示された資料から半馬という存在を想像、推測せざるを得ない。その過程で鑑賞者は展示物に添えられたテキストから過去の人間の営みや、社会の歴史を辿ることになる。つまりは半馬について知ろうとすればするほど文化が見えてくる構造になっている。また博物館への批評的な一面も持った作品でもある。
